FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Desoto trip Update
We had 2 blowouts on the dually on the way to Desoto and 1 one the way home to Daytona, while towing 7000# race truck and trailer on I-4. For a total of 3 blowouts within 100 miles. We took the 3 blown out tires to the Goodyear dealer in South Daytona on Ridgewood where the former owner of the truck purchased the tires 1.5 years ago. They were not “Goodyear” brand tires. Approached the problem with the dealer in a nice way, explaining the problem. We believe the dealer was under no obligation to do anything, we did not purchase the tires and they were 1.5 years old with about 7,000 miles on them. After the dealer made few phones calls the following happened: We left with the 6 new Wrangler Goodyear truck tires, mounted, a new front brake job on the dually, oil changed & lube job for under $700 out the door. We could have purchased 6 Goodyear commercial tires at Sam’s Club for $700 out the door. Needless to say we were surprised and pleased. All things considered. After further research the tires seemed to have failed because the truck sat hooked to a racecar trailer for months at a time. All of the tires looked in great shape and there was no way anyone could have known the tires would fail. Perhaps dry rotted? So beware! Kind of helps restore a little faith in mankind. Bill
The #32 FASCAR PRO TRUCK Racing Team had a very challenging weekend. The trip from Port Orange to Desoto Speedway started out great. Loaded early and set to arrive at the track in plenty of time to practice. This was the first visit to Desoto Speedway for the team. PROBLEM #1: Things started happening to create the challenges. The dually tow vehicle had a blowout in the right rear outside tire while pulling 7000 lbs. of trailer and race truck while on I-4 around Lakeland at 75 mph at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. And of course it happened in the extreme left hand lane. PROBLEM #2: No "key" to lower the spare tire. Did have special jack and jack handle! Remove shredded right rear outside tire, tape up torn fender light wires. Continue on, cautiously. PROBLEM #3:The blow out of remaining right rear tire happened 30 minutes later on I-4 , at 1:30 in the afternoon. At least in happened in the right hand lane. Still no "key" to lower the spare. Remove left rear outside tire and replace the shredded remaining right rear tire. Continue on, cautiously. PROBLEM #4: Arrive late at the race track. First lap on the track was qualifying... poorly (well. ..last). No other practice laps. Then the 50 lap race, which was rain delayed about an hour, got under way. "We ran behind a couple of slower trucks for a few laps to learn the track" says driver Bill Stacy. "By the time we got around them we were on our way to being lapped." Oh, and of course the radios failed 5 laps into the race. (New batteries ordered today and installed before the next race!!) 8th place finish with little to no damage. That's very good. Borrowed a "key" and lowered the spare tire. Placed in the back of the dually...... OK, time to go home. PROBLEM #5: I-4, 1:00 am, little traffic.... Remaining left rear tire goes......blow out number 3 !!! New spare installed on the left rear...of course it had only 15 lbs. of air. (Should have been checked at the track!) Lucky they are racers. Out comes the air tank from the trailer. It helps a little. After 15 miles of 35 mile an hour driving, out of tires at this point, they arrived at the second 24 convenient store's air machine in DeLand. The first one stole the 50 cents. This one was 75 cents, but it worked. All aired up, the team arrived back to the shop and home at 4:30 am Sunday morning. Well all except for the Crew Chief and his wife. They had to return to DeLand, in separate cars, arriving home at 5:45 am Sunday morning. No church Sunday. Thank God for a SAFE trip!! Now comes the challenge of addressing the failure of 3 rear tires, all with less than 7,000 miles on them, all within 100 miles! All three were SEVERO HT 235/85 R 16 Load E tires.
